Outpatients Centre

What's the project then?

The delivery of a new build extension to provide outpatient services to support both Cardiac and Oncology services. The scheme comprised a glazed link bridge, centralised reception and waiting area, 25 consulting rooms (with a number of specialist rooms housing cardiac ultrasound/echograph diagnostics) together with three sub-waits and associated support services.

How much then?

Around about £2M.

What did Studio Mode do then?

The hospital had appointed a P21 contractor to develop the design and construction methodology for the building shell. Whilst this was underway Studio Mode were appointed to work with the end users, agree the brief, develop GA plans, work as the client's representative with the P21 design team to develop and deliver fit-out including advising on interior design. This involved detailed liaison with both the Cardiac and Oncology OPD teams to be certain that the proposal layout would meet their requirements and accurately compliment their service. We also worked with the hospital's procurement team in advising on the selection of loose furniture in order to compliment our colour coded interior design. We then liaised with the commissioning team to assist in the department moves.

Any tricky bits?

The very fast track nature of this programme was such that we were developing the internal plans with the end users at the same time as the contractor's team were on site building the shell. This required some very careful coordination between the two teams: certain elements of the design were driven by the building's requirement to be vertically extendable by a further three floors topped with a helipad. Furthermore, the scheme was combining two clinical teams and requiring them to share facilities such as reception and waiting areas. With some careful negotiation and well thought through liaison we were able to arrive at a solution that was acceptable to everyone yet still deliverable against a very tight programme.

Any good then?

Yes. Both the Cardiac and Oncology departments widely praised the new facility and have both been delighted at how well the new scheme serves their patients.
