Children's X-Ray

What's the project then?

The expansion, re-planning and refurbishment of a live Children's X-ray department providing a service for both outpatients and inpatients, rearranged to provide a much needed additional X-ray room.

How much then?

Roughly £510k.

What did Studio Mode do then?

We were appointed as concept architect, project manager and interior designer for this intricate scheme and saw the project through from inception to delivery – this covered briefing, concept design, business case approval and the provision of GA plans, and included devising the phasing plan that would allow the service to be maintained during construction. We then took the role of project manager and co-ordinated the detailed design team during the production of working drawings – taking a lead role in liaising with the hospital estates team and gaining all the necessary approvals throughout. Thereafter we advised on the selection of contractor and then managed the project on behalf of the hospital during its 8 month duration on site, through to handover and occupation.

Any tricky bits?

Live department (running a 24 hour out-of-hours emergency service), lots of expensive equipment, kids. Yep – took some working out – but via an excellent working relationship with the department and the contractor we made it all sing.

Any good then?

Ask the kids! – the staff have and the feedback has been outstandingly positive. We wanted to do something different : we wanted to take adults into a children’s world (not the reverse). We reckon we got it right.
