Children's Oncology Unit

What's the project then?

A fast-track and inexpensive makeover of the entrance lobby to a children's oncology ward, funded by the departments own charity budget.

How much then?

Less than £6k.

What did Studio Mode do then?

Studio Mode were appointed to provide a detailed design solution and also arrange for the work to be carried out on site. We worked closely with the users to establish the brief and we then pulled together a visually-enticing and child friendly interior design. We established early that given the budget constraints, appointing a principal contractor would not be feasible. Therefore we separated the project into a series of small works packages As a result we took responsibility for the sequencing and coordination of each element of the project from concept, design through to delivery on site and handover.

Any tricky bits?

We needed to take extreme care with the selection of sub contractors since dust control in an area adjacent to a children's oncology ward is of absolute crucial importance. We therefore selected our sub contractors carefully, only choosing those who (like ourselves) fully understood or had experience of this type of environment. The sequencing of the sub contractors was also of critical importance. But, as always, via some very careful planning, good communication and by building strong relationships, we were able to make it all run like clockwork.

Any good then?

Certainly. We aspired throughout the project to use the charity money to maximum effect. We did. It has been widely praised by staff, but more importantly parents and children alike continue to enjoy the area to this day.
